Artist Commission for a Tribute to Len Goodman

Dartford Borough Council is inviting expressions of interest for the creation of a tribute to Len Goodman, professional ballroom dancer, dance teacher, dance competition adjudicator, Lecturer and Examiner. This commission represents an opportunity for an artist to create an engaging artwork, which recognises and celebrates the achievements of Len and his loyalty to Dartford.

The artwork is to be located on Market Street, a pedestrian area in the heart of the town centre, facing the popular Central Park Library and Museum. The Goodman Dance Academy is located above the “Food Plus” convenience store in Market Street. The building itself is out of bounds, however the public realm can be explored.  

Any artwork will be installed at ground level, embedded into the paving, allowing for accessibility and interaction with the public.  

Ideas could include text, motifs, or imagery that is associated with Len Goodman and dancing.  

This work will be permanent, and it is expected that the artwork will have a life span of at least 25 years.

The aim is to create an artwork that the town can be proud of, that celebrates Len Goodman, dance, and the joy of dancing, whilst also encouraging visitors to Dartford town centre.

• A celebration of Len Goodman’s life and his contribution to Dartford.
• A permanent floor based artwork, celebrating dance and the joy of dancing.
• A Town Centre attraction.
• A playful artwork encouraging public interaction.

Budget

£25,000 including artist’s fees, materials, fabrication, installation.
