We were delighted to host Jo Verrent, Director of Unlimited, in a deeply insightful conversation on representation, access, and empowerment in the arts in episode 3 of Talking Public Art, Series 3.
Published date: 20 June 2025
Jo is an activist and trailblazer supporting and amplifying disabled artists through funding, advocacy, and industry insights. We shared a frank discussion packed with real-life perspectives.
Jo discusses how Unlimited elevates disabled artists, safeguarding genuine representation while challenging one-size-fits-all policies. She emphasises tailored support that respects each artist’s individuality and autonomy.
We discussed rubbish off the shelf disability policies that often miss the mark. It was good to discuss practical solutions that dismantle structural barriers and unlock creative freedom.
We reflect on the frustrations many face with the Arts Council England’s Grantium system both cumbersome, and frequently inaccessible. Jo offers candid feedback on the need for bureaucracy to bend toward artists, not the other way around.
Jo admits to a ‘bloody-minded’ tenacity. She discusses how persistence and resilience have driven significant changes throughout her career.
Finally we touch on the importance of achieving a work/life balance. We’d urge you to watch ‘Dear Work’ an honest letter addressing the current challenges confronting leaders in the cultural sector penned by Jo Verrent.
